LDBEN Scotland

LDBEN Scotland offers a bespoke programme of briefings and networking events for business people and entrepreneurs with significant interests in Scotland. Membership brings opportunities to meet like-minded businesspeople and engage in constructive dialogue with Lib Dem leaders on the issues that impact business most.

Our Scottish business network supports Scottish Liberal Democrats promoting a strong economy for Scotland in partnership with the United Kingdom.

Liberal support for devolved government in Scotland has been consistent for over 100 years, and Lib Dems were active in the Scottish Constitutional Convention between 1989 and 1995. It was Liberal influence that secured proportional voting in for the Scottish Parliament, and hard work by Scottish Liberal Democrats increased the powers of the Parliament.

During the 1999-2007 Coalition in Holyrood, successful policies pressed by Liberal Democrat ministers included the abolition of university tuition fees to remove obstacles to developing top talent in Scotland, and proportional voting for local councils, which has led to less dominance by a single party on councils and more consensual decision making.

Amid the pandemic, it was Lib Dem Jamie Stone, MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, who built the largest cross-party group ever launched in Westminster to stand up for small businesses and self-employed people left jobless and excluded from government support.

As we emerge from lockdown and plan a recovery, it is the Lib Dems who will set a course for strong growth, the closest possible alignment with Scotland’s nearest trading partners, and reinvigorate our transition to a climate change-ready, greener economy.

The Liberal Democrats are the natural political home for business. We are the only pro-business, pro-EU, pro-Union party in Scotland and across the UK.

LDBEN Scotland members can expect:

  • Regular events and roundtables put senior business people in conversation with Lib Dem political leadership, including:

    • Willie Rennie MSP, Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats
    • Chief Whip Alastair Carmichael MP, Spokesperson on Brexit
    • Wendy Chamberlain MP, Spokesperson on Scotland
    • Juergen Maier, Chair, Lib Dem Business Task Force on Covid-19 and former CEO, Siemens UK
  • Private briefings and the inside track on political developments in Holyrood, and Westminster policies as they impact on our nation
  • Opportunities to input into policy papers and open dialogues, which may include:
    • What Brexit means for Scotland/the future of the Union
    • Electoral reform across the UK

“As Scottish businessmen, we feel it is vital that like-minded business leaders across our nation are able to speak with a collective voice, in Holyrood and in Westminster.”
